A Battle Half Won
Brenda told me that it took her 1 hour to finish feeding Charlotte all the medicines in the afternoon. We had to do that again after dinner, but before her bed time nen nen. Since daddy is not around, obviously mommy had to play that creative distraction part. Luckily, I have 2 new Baby Einstein DVDs from Joyce and Jin Miin. However, it only managed to distract Charlotte for the first 2 bottles of med. No major struggle and no throwing up too. Unfortunately, she got smarter when it came to the third bottle and that was when the battle started. She struggled, screamed and cried! She held me very tightly with all her tears, sweat and the mucus from her nose all over her face. I could almost hear her said "please mommy, no more medicine, please!". My heart broke seeing her suffering like that, I felt so helpless but had to continue the process.
We finally got all over it about 1 hour later, I could see she was really tired with all that struggling, screaming and fighting over the medicines. She fell asleep in my arm while I was feeding her milk later. I carried her to her room and gave her a big kissed on the forehead. Thank God that her fever had broke too.
I'm praying that she will be better tomorrow morning and be her cheerful self again.

Busy Weekend
Charlotte is very difficult to feed when comes to food. This includes medicine if I didn't mentioned this in the picky eater post. She will struggle, cry and throw-up almost 99% of the time when it comes to medicine. Dr. Jessica proscribed 3 medicines for her this time, Rhinathiol for cough, Poralamine for running nose and Panadol for fever. Luckily Brenda is very good at handling Charlotte and we all play different role when comes to medicine time. Daddy is responsible to creatively create distractions to quickly divert Charlotte's attention after the medicine is pumped into her mouth, otherwise she will soon throwing it up. Of course I want to make sure that the dosage is correct so I am responsible to prepare the medicine. Brenda is responsible to feed Charlotte (the toughest part) and I am helping her to hold down Charlotte at the same time. Sounds like a battle? You bet.
There were a couple of prearranged agenda for the weekends, Beatrice (one of my very first motherhood friends) was back from Ipoh with Ryan and Reese and we were suppose to meet up for lunch on Saturday. Unfortunately, I had to go without Charlotte as I was worried that it's contagious to Ryan and his 3 months old baby sister, Reese. Joyce and I were also talking about swimming on Sunday since many couldn't make it for the play group this week. Obviously we had to cancel that.
Charlotte is still coughing and has developed running nose since last night. Her fever is mild but it comes and goes with no consistent pattern, that worries me the most.
It was a very tiring and busy weekend, all revolves around medicine and food. Charlotte is already a picky eater and it is harder for me to feed her food/milk when she is sick. She rejected all solid for the last 2 days and only took 2-4oz of milk for every 3 hours lag. She is definitely loosing weight. Daddy is away again and I pray that Charlotte will be alright by the time daddy is back.

Is She Potentially Musical?
In "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" I wrote about her first accomplishment in the attempt of singing and later I also discovered that she is also able to do the very same for some of those songs that we have been singing it to her day and night. MIL also told me that Charlotte likes the Chinese New Year songs very much. She is now very good at this particular song "招財进宝" by catching the last word "宝" every time this phrase come up. I heard it myselft when Charlotte sang it the other day, it was really cute (LOL!).
One of Charlotte's favorite interactive muscial DVDs at her grandma's house (besides the CNY songs VCD) is the Hi-5. Last week, I went to pick up Charlotte after work as usual. She was watching the Hi-5 and Brenda told me to pay attention to her as the song "Feelings" coming up. I was very pleased to see her following the actions and movement together with the gang as they sang the song. Unfortunately, I didn't have the camera with me. Otherwise, I could have recorded that moment.
Just yesterday, I found out that she actually picked up the alphabets song "ABCDEFG" from the Leap Frog Magnetic Letter Set that I got for her from my recent business trip. I was a little disappointed when I first introduced it to Charlotte. She didn't pay attention and not attracted by the letter name and sound when one alphabet is attached but she prefers the letter song and keep playing it over and over again! Yesterday evening, I was sitting with her in the kitchen and watching her playing with this toy (as it is attached to the fridge). She did the same thing again, put one alphabet into the slot and instead of pressing on the letter to learn the name and sound she pressed on the song button and started to sing along and dance with the music too! She didn't get all the 26 alphabets obviously but she was able to complete each phrase with the last 1 or 2 alphabets. She sang the X, Y, Z the loudest and with the most accurate tune! I don't think she knows what those really mean but it is like she memorized it each time the song is played and finally she is able to sing along! She has such a sweet and wonderful voice and I have to say she has the mommy's gene (hehe!).
There was another discovery tonight, as usual she will choose her favorite movie to watch each night before bed time. She chose the "Happy Feet" and happily munching the cereal bar. She sang together with all the little penguins when they were attending Ms Viola's singing class. I can hear a very soft "da da da da..." and she got the rhythm right! The most interesting part was, she stood up and dance when she saw Mumble starts its tapping. I managed to get a video clip on this, check it out...

Picky Eater
When it comes to food, Charlotte is way far behind other kids around her age. I always pray that Charlotte would be soon like Hin Lerk, Bryan and even young little Ethan and Ching Ern every time I read their mommy blog about food they enjoyed and self-feeding skill they have developed.
I don't know where to start about this, maybe I should begin with Charlotte's milk consumption. Her milk intake was never more than 6oz. Most of the time (maybe 90% of the time) she only finished 4oz. I still make 6oz for her every time hoping for that 10% chance.
Charlotte stopped taking porridge around her 14th or 15th month, she prefers rice. Not only porridge, she doesn't like cereal, oatmeal, or any kind of food that is semi-solid including papaya! We started to feed her rice for lunch and dinner, with another meat and soup as side dish. She doesn't like fish and used to throw-up each time we feed her fish. Also, she refuses the same dish/soup at dinner if we already feed her at lunch. This is also applicable for her favorite food and vitamins, don't think that I can keep repeating it day after day, it is not even meal after meal. I bought a bottle of multi-vits for her from my recent US trip. It is Gummy Bear multi-vits for children. Prior to this, I bought the multi-vits from Amway. Charlotte took for 1 week and totally refused it after that. Then I bought the Appeton multi-vits, it also lasted for only 1 week. She loves the gummy bear multi-vits and I thought bingo! Now (after1 month), she will still ask for it but she only chew for fun and spit it out.
I tried all sorts, pastas, noodles, steam egg, fried egg, steam fish, fried fish, cheese, crackers, yogurt, grapes, apples, cantaloupe ...If she accepts the food, I can get her to finish it with a lot of patience and run around. She takes average 1hour to finish 1 small bowl of rice. Sometimes, she even decides no solid for the day but only milk!
Once I thought, maybe it's my cooking! Then again, she behaves the same way with her grandma's cooking, restaurants, hotels, kopi tiam...I also thought if I let her explore feeding herself maybe she will find fun in it and eat more! Bad idea, she hardly put anything in her mouth but only played with the food and made a lot of mess!!!
Patience, patience and more patience is the only way to get her eat. My only worried now is what to do when she goes to school...

Separation Anxiety
I was messaging with Jin Miin this morning and she told me this is "separatiom anxiety". I came to realize this too after the 1st week that I am back. Charlotte is trying to keep her eyes (hands and legs too) on me so that mommy will not "disappear" again.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Since I was very tired for the last few days, Pat helped me to pick up Charlotte from MIL's place after work. However, I always greeted Charlotte at the door step when her daddy drove her back. I could see her big smile from inside the car when she saw me waving at her. I greeted her the same way for the last 2 days but the difference was she noticed this one bright, big star in the sky right above when I picked her out from the car. She repeatedly saying "tar! tar!" (it's "star" without the "s") and keep signing with her hands, that's asking me to sing to her the "twinkle twinkle little star" song. So I sang to her while she did the signing throughout the entire song.
Yesterday morning, she walked into my room and as usual made a lot of fuss especially when we were all busy getting dressed for work. So, I asked her to lie down on my bed and look at the starts I pasted all over my ceiling. She got very excited when she saw that (she must have forgotten it) and started asking me to sing again! I sang but I was surprised by this great milestone that Charlotte has achieved!
Me: twinkle twinkle little...
Charlotte: tar!
Me: how I wonder what you...
Charlotte: are!
(very surprised by this so far and I continue...)
Me: up above the world so...
Charlotte: high!
Me: like a diamond in the...
Charlotte: kai!
(my goodness!!!)
Me: twinkle twinkle little...
Charlotte: tar!
Me: how I wonder what you...
Charlotte: are!!!
(she clapped as if a big accomplishment!)

Charlotte
When I was pregnant, we were not able to know the gender until the 6th month! So, Pat and myself had to plan every thing for both genders including the name. Web was our main resource when we were looking for names, websites like the http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/, http://www.babycenter.com/, http://123-baby-names.com/links.php, and of course some books. In fact, I used babycenter.com a lot throughout my entire pregnancy and I continue to get useful tips from the website on my toddler's development progress.
Our number 1 choice of girl's name was Kaitlyn. It means "little darling" originated from Celtic. We were 99.9% satisfied and sure with this before Pat found out that one of his colleagues just had a daughter and they named her Kaitlyn. Just one month before my due date, I also found out that another friend also naming her daughter the same name.
We then had to consider other names obviously. Some of our choices were Lynette, Ashley, Kaylie, Noelle, Deanna and of course Charlotte. We couldn't decide which is better, some were too common others were too difficult to pronounce and may potentially being relate to some funny meanings. We only came to agreement to name her Charlotte when we were due for her registration (oops...).
Charlotte, in french means petite and feminine and I always wanted to name my baby girl this name. Subconsciously, maybe I wished for her to be like the young talented soprano, Charlotte Church or this 6 years old girl http://www.metacafe.com/watch/647208/amazing_six_year_old_singer/
Working out a Chinese name was a challenge. Pat doesn't know Chinese and thus only very limited comment from him each time i suggest a Chinese name. We had to turn to our parents to ask for help. I also bought a book called "寶貝取名有學問" and also other books from friends and family members. The book suggested many methods to name a baby, eg. personality, career, number of strokes, the year the baby is born and etc. Some are rather difficult to understand while others are too complicated. Pat and I then agreed that we took the year and the number of strokes as guidelines.
Guidelines (those few that I remembered):
1. Charlotte is born in the year of "Rooster" and it is suggested that a rooster needs food and shelter. Words with these radicals are highly encouraged
2. Words with radical of knife or king/emperor are not encouraged to use because a rooster is slaughtered and served to the emperor during celebrations.
3. Try to get total strokes of 18 or 28, Pat likes number 8 (our house number is 28 if you noticed)
My original choice was 俐 (clever, intelligent) 宜 (appropriate), pronounce as "lì yí". It met criteria #1 as it carries the radicals of food and shelter. However, later we realized that it violates criteria #2 because 俐 has the radical of "knife". Also, that time we wanted to name our baby girl as Lynette instead of Charlotte. The initial of this combination is not very appealing (if you can figure out)...
宣 (announce, proclaim) 宥 (forgive, pardon), pronounce as "xuān yòu". MIL suggested this and told us that it means she has the authority to conduct pardon. It has total 18 strokes, both the characters have the radical that represents shelter, met criteria #1 and #3 and also not violating #2. So we accepted it.
Her full name is Charlotte Chan. Yes, just Charlotte Chan and you must be wondering why? Well, it was my idea not to register the Chinese name but just make it available for her. Most of the time I noticed that someone's Chinese name is hardly refer to if he/she has an English name. Take Pat's name for example, his full name is Patrick Chan Kin Tek. Only his family members call him "Tek" (which is not even his full Chinese name) and everyone else knows him as Patrick. However, we want her to have a Chinese name so that she can use it if she needs to.
Therefore, Charlotte Chan or 陈宣宥 (chén xuān yòu) is the name of our baby girl. Petite, feminine but yet strong and empowered to forgive.
Anyone else left to tag? I doubt so...

Back on the Car Seat!
We gave up on car seat when Charlotte was about 10months old. Back then, my auntie was taking care of her and sometimes they took her "kai kai" in the afternoon without a car seat. After a few times, we failed to strap her down and we gave up totally when Brenda came.
On Sunday night itself, I took the car seat out again and showed it to Charlotte. She immediately sat on it (we were still in the room). In order not to discourage her, both Pat and myself had to carry her (with her in the car seat) to the car. She was alright and we headed on to MIL's house for dinner without major issue. Phew!
This morning, I had to take Charlotte for her PD visit and I put her on the car seat again. She did alright too except she couldn't fall asleep. Charlotte is very used to being carried and fell asleep in our arms. However, she was very sleepy and tired on our way back after the PD visit but still didn't quite comfortable falling asleep in her car seat. So, I asked her to close her eyes and decided to offer her my hand. She closed her eyes while holding on to my hand and less than 5 seconds she was already in dreamland!
I'm going to be away soon, I only hope Pat and her grandparents are going to continue this effort.
One Big Step in Vocabulary
Another time, we were on our way home from dinner and shopping. Brenda was feeding Charlotte "nen nen" at the back (this is what we normally do by the way, feed her "nen nen" in the car, change her PJ and she will be in dreamland in no time). When she finished her "nen nen", she shouted "wet! wet!" it was so loud and clear! Apparently, the bottle licked and her dress was wet! All of us were so impressed and so happy for her in making such a big progress. She had this big smile on her face as if she understood when we all praised her for being such a clever girl!
She also picked up "ant" and "frog" from the movie "The Ant Bully". Whenever she sees a 6-legged or 8-legged insects these days she will call them ants anyway. She will choose her movie every night by saying those words that she knows. If she says "ant ant" means she wants to watch The Ant Bully, or if she says "cow cow" we will have to play the Barn Yard for her.
But I'm still impressed with the progress and achievement Xuan made. She is so advance and I hope Charlotte soon would be able to talk like her ...

Little Darth Vader
I bought Charlotte a bathrobe last night from Jusco as I felt it's a little freezing to walk her (while she's still wet) from the pool to the bathroom downstairs where it's all air conditioned. I wrapped her in a towel last week but she didn't quite like it because her hand movement was restricted.
I put the new bathrobe on her right after I took her out from the pool and see how she looked like...
Don't you think this looks familiar? Yes, a little Darth Vader in pink (LOL!)

Safari Adventure - KLCC

Aquaria - KL Conventional Center
When we first entered, there were a few small, shallow open "pools" where the turtles, star fish and other small fishes are put inside for the visitors to touch and feel them. My husband picked up a star fish and gave it to Charlotte, she recognized it and said "tar!" (star). Then her daddy spotted the turtles and picked up a big one for her! I thought she wouldn't touch it but I was wrong.
Charlotte enjoyed most of it except the reptiles. We only realized it when she kept saying "bye bye!" to the reptiles, she was trying to tell us to move on to the next station.
They were also promoting "Adopt A Turtle" campaign, if you sign-up and they will micro chipped one baby turtle for you and you can monitor it's progress via the internet (sorry, not for you to bring it back). They will release it to the open sea when it's 3-4months old (or 3-4 years? cannot remember) and you would be still able to locate it. We think that it's a good idea but Charlotte is too young to be able to understand the meaning behind it. We will probably do that in the future.
We were right on the "feed the fish" schedule when we at the last segment of the Aquaria. All the kids were sitting right in fron of this big "window" and waiting for the "feeding" show to start. It was actually very interesting and I think Charlotte picked up the meaning of it as she was telling her grandma: "Man, aam..." and showing sign with her hands too.
Play Group
See how busy everybody was...
The boys particularly loved the new scooter we bought for Charlotte but no photos captured as we were all too busy looking after them when they played so that they didn't get themselves hurt or we were enjoying the Sarawak Laksa which Bryan's mommy brought over (ha! ha!)
Want to know why Charlotte was holding her hand in the last picture? Check out the interesting caption that Ethan's mommy put up: http://mrbulat.giddytigers.com/2007/06/03/when-the-kids-come-out-to-play/

Mobility - It's when you have full control of it...
We bought it finally (postponing the table and stools set to next month) and the store assistance told us that they need about 30min to assemble it. So, we took Charlotte to Mc D for lunch and got her a Happy Meal with Shrek III toy! She has collected 4 so far (oops...)
Finally, her new scooter is ready and she was happily trying it out right side of the store! Still, needs a bit more practice on those coordinations (nearly went down the escalator!)

How Do I Live Without You?
Hubby and I took this opportunity to try to finish up all the DVDs that we bought but have not been able to watch them. We usually watch the movie after Charlotte went to bed but most of the time we were not able to finish it because we could hear Charlotte crying half way through the movie (because of the surrounds). I keep the remote control nowadays so that hubby doesn't get to increase the volume without my knowledge. He complains that it is not as fun and exciting when the surrounds are not put in full blast. No choice, this is one of those little things that we need to give in.
Here is the list of movies we watched this week:
1. Eragon
2. Music & Lyrics
3. The Banquet
4. Firewall
We were able to enjoy our dinners without having to worry of places or food that are suitable for Charlotte. We have not been having nice, peaceful meals for the last 18 months (but life got much better since we have Brenda, our super duper maid!). We had dinner like seafood (too dirty for Charlotte), steamboat (too long time for Charlotte), Bak Kut Teh (too warm for Charlotte), Victoria Station (...) for the past few days.
Having said that, I miss hearing Charlotte's voice, I miss singing songs with her, I miss seeing her dance when we turned on the music/movie but most of all, I miss her kisses! She has the sweetest kiss of all. This is what she normally do when I ask her: Charlotte, come give mommy a kiss. She kiss you on your lips (I know, not a very good idea but it's so sweet!). She would pause a little bit and ends it with a very soft and light "pop"! It's a perfect "mmmmmuak"!
I'm anxious now thinking about having to leave her again for 2 business trips coming up soon
